John Berks launches his new book ‘What a Boykie”

John Berks, the legendary 702 presenter who has retired from radio, had his book launch recently at Randpark Club.

This was an incredibly successful event where all the books on the table were sold out and more had to be brought from the car to fulfil the demand from the guests.  John Berks and Robin Binckes (The author) did book signing on the evening while the band, Lemon and Limelight played Jazz music.  John had the guests roaring with laughter as he did voice impressions and told jokes, like he did on radio where he gained many fans throughout the years.  He has not lost his magic touch and was as funny as he always was.  A four course fine dining dinner was served and paired with Jordan Wines from Stellenbosch.

The book is called ‘What a Boykie” and is an autobiography.  A story of determination and guts of a boy 'born with a wooden spoon' in his mouth, who managed through perseverance and sheer will power to turn that into one of silver. Born the third child of hardworking parents, a nervy, hypochondriac who broke into a nervous rash whenever he felt uncomfortable or stressed.

From an early age John would listen to the radio at any opportunity that presented itself, spending hours perfecting the mimicking of great commentators, holding a tablespoon up to his mouth as he spoke, setting his mind on a career in radio.

His radio career spanned 40 years, included working on LM Radio, SABC, Springbok Radio, Radio 5, Capitol Radio, Swazi Music Radio and 702 is legendary.

This book shows how much can be achieved when the odds are stacked against you and all you have is determination, passion and an unparalleled talent for communicating.

John Berks commented, “I had a dream to be on radio.  I thought the spoken word was so magical.  It is the theatre of the mind, you just need to close your eyes and visualise.  Radio will always be a win as it is a very special medium.”
